The WINS resolution information was not updated. The record format is corrupt.

Recently, I was cleaning up DNS in an Active Directory domain and came across an old WINS entry. Decided it wasn't needed anymore and was just a legacy setting from many domain controllers ago. I attempted to remove the setting and received the error:


"The WINS resolution information was not updated. The record format is corrupt."


Applicable Products

  • Windows Server 2012

  • Windows Server 2016

  • Windows Server 2019

Solution


Open PowerShell on the domain controller as an administrator and run the following command, replacing <company.com> with your DNS zone:

This amazingly came up and helped me in 2025. One note; the command on your page is missing the hyphen before the switch RRType. It should be; Remove-DNSServerResourceRecord -ZoneName <company.com> -Force -RRtype "WINS" -Name "@"
